Near-Fault Ground Motion – application LEBANON

Résumé

For weak to moderate seismic regions that however suffered historical devastating earthquakes, the low-magnitude instrumental seismicity is most often not sufficient to predict large strong ground motion. Synthetic seismograms are therefore a good complement to the available earthquake catalogue to predict ground motions and determine the potential of future damaging earthquakes. The purpose of my thesis is to examine the sensitivity of near-fault ground motions to the source complexity by simulating realistic source models. The application case is studying the ground motion sensibility in Beirut, located at 25 km away from the main fault - the Yammouneh fault - in Lebanon.
This proposal asks for the chance to work at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon in this specific subject, with Mayssa Dabghi, a ph.D. graduate from UC Berkeley.
