Retention of As and Pb by jarosites in polluted soils and mine tailings in Mexico

Résumé

We are requesting funds to support an 8 week academic stay by a Ph.D. student from Mexico (UNAM), to be trained by Dr. Alejandro Fernández-Martínez (ISTerre) in the modeling of EXAFS data collected during three cycles at the Advanced Light Source (ALS), Berkeley National Lab. The samples processed include synthetic jarosite, arsenic-substituted jarosites, and asenic-lead-substituted jarosites, as well as lead-sorbed samples of the different jarosites, and jarosite-rich samples from contaminates scenarios. The main goal is to understand the forms of lead and arsenic reactivity on jarosites, which are minerals generated under highly acidic and sulfate-rich environments, such as those found under acid-mine drainage. The general aim is to describe the bonding environment of both elements in jarosites and elucidate their retention mechanisms, under the hypothesis that a positive synergistic retention exists between the two. Dr. Fernández-Martínez has ample experience in modeling of EXAFS data and on environmental mineralogy.
