Shanghai 2022 ranking: Université Grenoble Alpes in the top 50 in Earth Sciences and Remote Sensing


Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) has maintained its position in the top 150 of the Shanghai 2022 ranking of the world’s best universities, published on 15 August. It is now in the top 100 of the world’s best universities in 15 disciplines, including five in the top 50 and one in the top 20. It ranks 12th among the world’s top universities in remote sensing (2nd in France) and 24th (3rd in France) in Earth Sciences, two themes covered by the OSUG laboratories.

At the national level, UGA has also maintained its position as the 5th largest university in France and 1st university in the region, alongside the universities of Aix-Marseille and Strasbourg, after the four institutions in the Paris region: Université Paris Saclay, Sorbonne Université, PSL and Université de Paris.

In the thematic ranking published in July 2022, it is positioned as the third French university after Université Paris Saclay and Sorbonne Université in terms of number of disciplines ranked in the top 100.

Methodology of the Shanghai thematic ranking

The Shanghai Thematic Ranking 2022 classifies institutions according to 5 themes - Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences - divided into 54 disciplines. The research performance indicators considered in this ranking are the number of scientific articles published by the institution in a given discipline, the impact of these articles and the number of citations of these scientific publications in other articles, the number of articles published in the top scientific journals, the international character of the published results (number of international teams involved) and the scientific prizes won by the scientists of the evaluated universities
