Internal tides in the Earth’s oceans, namely internal gravity waves generated by barotropic tidal motion over bottom topography, dissipate globally one third (i.e. 1 TW) of the barotropic energy and, in doing so, play a crucial role for ocean dynamics and climate. To model internal tides, generally the wave radiation of “oscillating” topography is considered. In this study we consider specific three-dimensional topographies producing wave focusing inside the fluid, hence nonlinear effects leading to higher harmonics, turbulent mixing, and momentum transport. A novel theory is developed for idealized toroidal topography, and extended numerically via the Boundary Element Method to arbitrary topography. Results are confronted to laboratory experiments using a novel visualization method based on Laser-Induced Fluorescence.
