Over the last few years there has been growing evidence that a significant part of slip on subduction zones is released slowly1,2 and goes undetected3. Recent GPS observations also suggest that the rate of subduction of a plate segment is not constant in time but may undergo large fluctuations over periods of months or years4,6,7, resulting in diminished or enhanced plate coupling (...)

In Southern Italy, ∼3 mm/yr of extensional strain is accommodated tectonically across the Apennines (e.g. d’Agostino et al. 2008, d’Agostino 2014), leading to an important seismic hazard, as it was sadly illustrated by the Irpinia earthquake in 1980 (Mw=6.8) that is the strongest instrumentally recorded earthquake in Italy. Recently, the analysis of GPS time series near to large karst aquifers in this area showed that the (...)

Title : Study of the early postseismic phase of the Tohoku-Oki earthquake
Supervisor : Hugo Perfettini (hugo.perfettini ird.fr) ; Co-supervisor : Mathilde Radiguet (mathilde.radiguet ujf-grenoble.fr)
Key Words : Tohoku-Oki earthquake ; coseismic slip ; postseismic slip ; early afterslip ; inversion ; link between coseismic rupture, afterslip and aftershocks
The purpose of this master project is to analyze the early (up to several days after the mainshock) postseismic phase of the (...)

sujet de stage M2R-TS
The diving of subduction slabs beneath convergent plate margins is at the origin of the largest and most destructive earthquakes, as illustrated by the 2011 MW 9.0 Tohoku earthquake in Japan. At the contact between the subducting and the overriding slabs, slip can occur either in an unstable way with an elastic stress accumulation abruptly relaxed through a sliding instability, or in a stable way, i.e. involving slip velocities that are slow compared to earthquake propagation velocities (...)

The two main chocks of April-May 2015 earthquakes in Nepal have caused a large number of casualties and destruction. About 20% of the casualties results because of numerous co-seismic avalanches and landslides that triggered village (...)
