Shanghai 2023 thematic ranking: Université Grenoble Alpes strengthens its position among France’s top universities

Ranked in the top 150 in the global ranking published last August, Université Grenoble Alpes maintains its position in the Shanghai 2023 ranking with a strong performance in the thematic ranking published on 27 October. For 13 disciplines, the university is in the top 100 of the world’s best universities, including 5 in the top 50 and 2 in the top 20. It is therefore the 4th French university in terms of the number of disciplines ranked in the top 100. This new ranking confirms UGA’s position as the country’s leading research-intensive university, after the universities of Ile-de-France. It ranks 8th among the world’s top universities in remote sensing (1st in France) and 18th (3rd in France) in Earth Sciences, two themes covered by the OSUG laboratories.

UGA’s results for the 2023 edition of this thematic ranking (published two months after the general Shanghai ranking) underline the excellence of the work carried out by the scientific teams working in the laboratories and research structures of UGA and its partner research organizations. They also demonstrate that the institution’s research and innovation strategy continues to deliver results.

UGA ranks 4th in France for the number of disciplines ranked in the top 100, after Université Paris Saclay, Sorbonne Université and Université Paris Cité.

Of the 55 disciplines evaluated, UGA was ranked 33 times: 5 times in the top 50, 13 in the top 100, 21 in the top 200, 29 in the top 300, 33 in the top 500.

UGA ranked in 33 of the 55 disciplines evaluated

The Shanghai Thematic Ranking 2023 ranks institutions in 55 disciplines (compared with 54 in 2022) grouped into 5 main themes: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences.
A new discipline makes its appearance in the 2023 rankings: textile science and engineering.

The research performance indicators taken into account in this ranking are the number of scientific articles published by the institution in a given discipline, the impact of these articles and the number of citations of these scientific publications in other articles, the number of articles published in the top scientific journals, the international nature of the published results (number of international teams involved) and the scientific prizes won by scientists from the evaluated universities.
